BIG BROOK, NEW JERSEY
SATURDAY, JUNE 3, 2000

Big Brook is one of the classic fossil localities in the Eastern U.S., and continues to produce a wide variety of fossils for first time collectors and veterans alike. Dating from the late Cretaceous, the fauna of Big Brook is a record of the life extant at the very end of the age of the dinosaurs. Invertebrate specimens commonly found include snails, ammonites, belemnites, and bivalves such as Exogyra and the brachiopod Choristothyris. Vertebrate material include, among others things, sharks' teeth, turtle and crocodile remains, and periodically, teeth and bone from giant extinct marine reptiles - mosasaurs and plesiosaurs. Although most fossils here come from this period, fossils of Ice Age mammals are not uncommon.

The field trip leader will be Donald Phillips

A special release for this trip - our Field Guide Editor Erich Rose will be presenting a new, comprehensive field guide to Big Brook for those on the bus. The guide will be quite large - we may be required to charge a nominal amount to those wishing a copy to cover reproduction costs.

Last year, we found that, despite our best efforts, many people who wished to go on our trips couldn't make it due to lack of transportation. So this year we're providing a full coach bus with a rest room on board. All you need is a subway token and you're off !

There will be an on-bus lecture on the geologic and life history of the areas we'll be passing through on the way to the brook.

COST: $21 per person to cover the cost of the bus. There is no attendance fee.

For more information, contact the Field Trip Leader.
