DEVONIAN FOSSILS OF THE MOHAWK VALLEY
LEESVILLE, NEW YORK
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 30, 1999
MEETING AT 11:00 A.M.

Our fall collecting trip will be to the Mohawk Valley area, not Far West of Albany, N.Y. We will be visiting three sites from the Devonian Period. The first will be near Leesville. The rocks that we'll be searching for fossils belong to the Lower Devonian Kalkberg Formation (Helderberg Group). This limestone outcrop is rich in a variety of marine fossils, including colonial corals, horn corals, many species of brachiopods, bryozoans, bivalves, gastropods, some phacopsid trilobites, etc. Afterwards, our group will move on to two other sites nearby.

DRIVING DIRECTIONS WILL BE IN THE NEWSLETTER

TOOLS: Geology hammers and chisels for trimming.

SAFETY GOGGLES OR SAFETY GLASSES ARE REQUIRED  FOR ALL PEOPLE AT THE COLLECTING SITES !!!!

You should also bring newspaper for wrapping your finds, and bags or boxes to store them for the trip home. Some small plastic boxes or empty photographic film containers are useful for small fossils. Also, fall foliage should be at or just past peak, so remember to bring your camera !

CLOTHING: It will probably be chilly in the Albany area in late October, so bring along warm cloths - jackets, sweaters, and gloves - just in case. You can always leave extra cloths in the car. It may also be sunny - a hat and sunscreen may be a good idea. Rain gear may be necessary depending. Although late in the season, you may wish to bring insect repellent in case of mosquitoes and ticks. To avoid ticks, simply stay clear as much as possible from vegetation at the site.

FOOD: Since one can get quite thirsty working in the open, bring along some water or other beverages. You may also wish to bring a box lunch. There will also be places to eat in surrounding towns.

TIME: Meet the field trip leaders at about 11:00 A.M. A field guide will be provided to those attending.

All attending must be members of the New York Paleontological Society
