DEVONIAN MARINE FOSSILS OF NORTHWESTERN NEW JERSEY MONTAGUE, NEW JERSEY SATURDAY, MAY 22, 1999 MEETING AT 11:00 A.M. Our second field trip of the season will be to two sites in northwestern New Jersey in search of marine fossils from the Devonian Period. Unlike our Bushkill trip in April, these will not be to the Mahantango Formation but rather to two different formations altogether. For those capable of making it to both trips, the different rock types and faunas associated with different formations of the same period provide an interesting comparison of Devonian fossils in the region. Our first stop will be to the Glenerie Formation (Oriskany Group). Here are found a large variety of fossils including a number of brachiopods species such as Strophomena and the very large Acrospirifer, the bivalve Actinopteria, Tentaculites, the beautiful snail Platyceras and many others. Our second site will be to a fossil reef (bioherm) nearby. During the Devonian, this reef fringed an ancient shoreline that existed in what is now the Valley and Ridge mountains of western New Jersey. The dense limestone of the Coeymans Formation here contains brachiopods like Gypidula, large crinoids, horn corals (all now extinct), the colonial coral Favosites, and the trilobite Dalmanites. Once again, the trip will be led by Marvin Orlinick & Bob Buchbinder A field guide will be provided to those attending. For more information or questions, please email fieldtrips@nyps.org Note: All attending must be members of theNew York Paleontological Society |
